What is the Orton-Gillingham Approach

The Orton-Gillingham Approach is the proven teaching practice for struggling readers and spellers.  Commonly known as OG, it benefits all students, not just students with dyslexia.

Teachers “diagnose” the learning gap, “prescribe” explicit instruction, and “systematically” teach new concepts in a predictable way. simply said, reaching is taught step by step. Lessons are created for the individual student. Students learn in one-on-one sessions and instruction moves at the student’s pace.

One-on-one settings help teachers “get in the trenches” where they can best identify learning barriers and create specific instruction to address the gaps.  Students cannot move on to “filing the next gaps” until they master and fully understand the current concept.

The Orton-Gillingham Approach allows both the student and teacher time to lay a solid foundation for more complex concepts. These are all important pieces of reading intervention.

When struggling readers get Orton-Gillingham based instruction, they can learn to read and spell skillfully!

At JUMP Reading, we get in the trenches to help each student through their learning barrier.  And of course, we celebrate their successes!

The Orton-Gillingham Approach is a powerful approach based on three tools: explicit, multisensory, and systematic instruction.  Effective intervention for dyslexia requires all three components.
